The emptiness of the role, the stage, the actor
A Course for actors, Directors and Teachers
The theatres are empty – there is silence. We have time for ourselves, for reorientation and self-study. The imposed vacuum offers us entirely new insights, new practices – the break is given new content.
In the course of my research on quantum pedagogy, I feel the need to change one’s own consciousness, I call it Quantum Cognition and in this sense, I would like to explore together with you the beauty, power and energetic potential of the void.
Let us start with whether or not we can believe a word. These are different theatres. What is your experience of silence and pause on stage? Are these different things for you, or… ? Silence, is it when you are alone? When you speak without words with other partners? When an actor is silent speaking? Pause in dialogue, in the monologue, in the game, in the feeling, in the content? What gives you a specific experience of the actor’s emptiness of being on stage? How do you understand words that are not spoken? Did you feel the beauty of silence on stage, the physiologically tangible presence of the silence of a word?
It seems to me that silence is the most mysterious territory for an actor. Something lives in the void that is not defined. The emptiness reveals the “mystery of presence,” which the Theatre shares with life. Our seminar – training and practical work – is the actor’s entry on the border of emptiness and fullness, words and silence, sound and silence, being and nothingness. I know – there, on the border, an actor connected by two realities of life and theatre acquires true freedom.
